THE COMPETITION IS HELD FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY AT THE SUBURBAN DENEN COLOSSEUM COURTS WHERE INDIA TRIUMPHED 4-1 OVER JAPAN IN LAST YEAR'S EASTERN ZONE FINALS. INDIA HAD CAPTURED A SINGLES VICTORY TODAY AFTER THE FIRST DAY OF DAVIS CUP EASTERN ZONE FINALS AGAINST JAPAN HERE. THE SECOND SINGLES MATCH WAS ADJOURNED BECAUSE OF BAD LIGHT AND ENDED ONE OF THE CLOSEST OPENING DAY'S SINGLES YET SEEN IN THE FIVE DAVIS CUP ENCOUNTERS BETWEEN JAPAN AND INDIA. IN THE OPENING "VETERANS MATCH", INDIAN'S KRISHNAN, 29, BEAT OSAMU ISHIGURO, 30, AFTER TWO HOURS 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, 10-8.

IN THE SECOND SINGLES INDIA'S PREMIT LAL, 26, AND KOJI WATANABE, 24, BATTLED FOR TWO AND A HALF HOURS THEN ADJOURNED BECAUSE OF BAD LIGHT WITH THE SCORE STANDING AT (INDIA FIRST) 3-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 4-4. THE MASTERY OF KRISHNAN IN THE OPENING SINGLES WON HIM THROUGH AGAINST A SPIRITED LAST SET RECOVERY BY ISHIGURO, BOTH PLAYERS OPENED WITH LONG, STEADY BASELINE SHOTS WHICH WON KRISHNAN THE FIRST SET. UNDER PRESSURE IN THE SECOND HE BROUGHT SLICES AND A GREATER VARIETY OF SHOTS OF PLAY BUT COULD NOT STOP ISHIGURO FINE LINE AND UPSETTING CROSS COURT SHOTS. KRISHNAN NOW WON BROUGHT HIS BOOM SERVE INTO PLAY SENDING DOWN ALMOST UNPLAYABLE SHOTS THAT BROUGHT Ishiguro TO A STANDSTILL. THE JAPANESE DOUBLE FAULTED AND APPEARED ALMOST TO GIVE UP HOPE WHEN HE LOST THE SET 2-6. BUT IN THE FOURTH SET HE STAGED A GREAT RECOVERY. KRISHNAN WAS TWO INCHES AWAY FROM VICTORY WHEN A PASSING LINE SHOT WENT OUT. IT SEEMED ALL OVER WHEN ISHIGURO LOST HIS SERVICE AND TRAILED 1-3 BUT HE BROKE THROUGH KRISHNAN'S SERVICE, HELD HIS OWN TO THE 3-ALL THEN MISSED BREAKING THROUGH AGAIN BY MUFFING A CROSS COURT SHOT. THE JAPANESE CONTINUED TO SNATCH BACK THE GAME FROM KRISHNAN'S CRIP BUT WHEN TROLLING 9-8 HE LOST HIS ADVANTAGE THEN THE GAME WITH A DOUBLE FAULT. LAL AND WATANABE OPENED A MUCH FASTER GAME WITH LAL FORCING THE ATTACK. WATANABE'S FINE SIDE LINE SHOTS AND PUNCHED CROSS COURT SHOTS HAD LAL IN DESPAIR UNTIL HE WARMED UP IN THE SECOND SET RACE THROUGH 6-1. BOTH PLAYERS WERE EVENLY MATCHED IN HEIGHT AND BUILD, WATANABE CONTINUED TO BE THE MORE AGGRESSIVE WHILE LAL REMAINED STEADIER. HIS BACKHAND CROSSCOURT SHOTS NEVER FALTERED BUT HIS OVERHEAD SMASHES OFTEN ENDED IN DISASTER. WATANABE WOULD LET HIM RACE TO THE NET THEN LOB THE BALL HIGH. BUT, WATANABE TOO MADE ERRORS HIS BACKHAND WAS WEAKER, HE TOOK THE THIRD SET 6-4 BUT IN THE FOURTH LAL REMAINED CALM AND STEADY AGAINST AN ANXIOUSLY ATTACKING WATANABE AND WON 6-3 TO EVEN THE SETS. IN THE FIFTH SET LAL SUFFERED SLIGHT CRAMP IN HIS LEFT LEG AND NEEDED MASSAGE. BOTH PLAYERS WERE MISSING W
INNING SHOTS BUT BOTH REPEATEDLY OUTPOSITIONED THE OTHER WITH A THRILLING DISPLAY OF CROSS COURT SHOTS, LOBS SMASHES AND SIDELINE SHOTS THAT SPED PAST FAILING RACQUETS. THEY WILL FINISH THEIR MATCH TOMORROW. THIS WILL BE FOLLOWED BY THE DOUBLE MATCH.
