Background: The widow of Chile's former President, Salvador Allende, has received one of the Soviet Union's top honours. In a ceremony at the Kremlin on Friday (30 September) she was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize.

SYNOPSIS: The diploma for the peace prize was presented by the chairman of the International Lenin Prizes committee, Mr. Nikolai Blokhin. Judging by the ovation given by the officials who gathered for the occasion, his committee's choice was a popular one.

But, behind the smiles of Senora Hortensia de Allende there must have been some sadness, for it was almost four years ago to the day that the Marxist government of Chile was deposed by a military junta. And it was during this bloody military takeover that Dr. Allende was killed. Since her husband's death Senora Allende has continued to work for the ideals he stood for. She has spoken at various international rallies, denouncing President Augusto Pinochet's military rule in Chile, and calling for more freedom for the Chilean people.

Senora Allende is now vice president of the International Democratic Federation of Women and was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize for what was called "her active participation in the movement for peace". As well as receiving a diploma and gold medal there was a special addition--flowers for a woman winner.

For many reasons a moving moment for Senora Allende.
