Background: The Second Kinshasa International Fair opened on Thursday last week (June 24) with 2,500 exhibitors from 50 countries taking part. It will run until July 11. The number of countries exhibiting in the fair, held every two years, is almost double that at the first fair. This film shows the Fair on its first day, including the opening ceremony by President Joseph Mobutu.

SYNOPSIS: The Democratic Republic of the Congo -- and the opening of the Second Kinshasa International Fair last week. President Joseph Mobutu was there to open the exhibition which runs until July 11, in which 2,500 exhibitors from 50 countries are taking part.

The Commissioner of the Fair, Member of Parliament Mr. Thomas Tumba, spoke at the opening ceremony. He said the number of exhibitors was almost double that at the first Fair, held two years ago. It is now intended to hold similar Fairs every two years.

The Congolese Minister of Commerce, Mr. Thomas Lwango, said that the number of exhibitors was the result of promotional work by President Mobutu.

Then, to the accompaniment of drumbeats from the band, President Mobutu cut the ribbon to declare the Fair open before touring the exhibits with his party.

The President and his party left after an extensive tour of the fair, which includes exhibits from 27 African countries, 15 European countries, and the United States of America.

At a special conference on the opening day, Congolese Finance Minister Mr. Louis Namwisi spoke to a gathering of the Fair's organisers and some of the exhibitors involved. The theme of the Fair, he told them, was "Economy in the service of man". It reflected the Congo at work and its economic expansion in harmony with other countries.

Among exhibits from the United States of America are three Government agencies -- the Departments of Commerce and Agriculture, and the United States Information Service. Thirty other American concerns, from giant industries to advanced technology organisations, are also taking part. Only ten participated in the previous Fair.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the 18-day Fair, and its organisers hope to attract an even greater number of exhibitors at the next event. This one, meanwhile, is expected to be a great success.
