Background: Fighting erupted near the South Lebanese port of Tyre on Tuesday (2 May) when French troops serving with the united Nations peace keeping force came under guerrilla attack. According ??? there were several hostile exchanges between U.N. ??? Palestinian guerrillas, which led to three ??? deaths, with several others wounded.

SYNOPSIS: Reuters reports that three French soldiers died when their armoured car was destroyed in an ambush less than one kilometre from their barracks near the port of Tyre. A jeep following the armoured car also came under attack and was sprayed with automatic fire. The ambush occurred a short time after the French U.N. detachments barracks had come under heavy mortar attack, in which one soldier was reported killed and several wounded.

The wounded were loaded onto army helicopters and flown into neighbouring Israel for emergency treatment. After the clashes, a previously unknown guerrilla group threatened that there would be similar incidents. The group - the Popular Resistance Front for the Liberation of the South from Occupation and Fascism - said it would consider U.N. soldiers as enemy forces if they tried to forbid their fighters from striking at Israeli invasion forces.

The latest outbreak of fighting came on the eve of a United Nations Security Council meeting to discuss the proposed increase of U.N. troops in Lebanon from 4,000 to 6,000 men. France which already has 1,000 men in the country -- the largest single national unit -- has announced it is prepared to send another 500 men to increase the peace-keeping contingent.
