  • Description

THE COMBAT FORCE OF 1800 AMERICAN MARINES WHO LANDED IN BANGKOK AT DAWN MAY 17 WERE FLOWN IMMEDIATELY TO A DESOLATE, WATERLESS REGION - NONG HAN - IN NORTH-EAST THAILAND. THIS SPEEDY MOVE TO WITHIN 50 MILES OF THE BORDER WAS TO RESIST ANY AGGRESSIVE ACTION BY LAOS.

TWELVE U.S. AIR FORCE C 130 HERCULES TRANSPORT PLANES SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE AIRLIFT BEFORE NIGHTFALL.

ON MAY 20, MORE AMERICAN TROOPS AND EQUIPMENT WERE FLOWN INTO THAILAND. A UNIT OF 48-TON TANKS HAD TO STAY BEHIND ABOARD THE 30,800-TON AIRCRAFT-CARRIER "VALLEY FORGE2", MOORED IN THE GULF OF SIAM, BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO BIG TO GO UNDER RAILWAY BRIDGES ON THE ROUTE NORTH.

ACCORDING TO REPORTS, THAILAND WAS LIKELY TO DECIDE MAY 21 OR 22 WHETHER TO ACCEPT OFFERS OF MILITARY SUPPORT FROM BRITAIN AND OTHER S.E.A.T.O. (SOUTH EAST ASIAN TREATY ORGANISATION) POWERS BESIDES THE UNITED STATES.

THERE WERE THOUGHT TO BE TWO REASONS FOR HER HESITATION TO ACCEPT OFFERS. ONE WAS THAT THE PEOPLE CONSIDER AFRICAN AID TO BE ENOUGH. ANOTHER WAS THAT THE ARRIVAL OF AMERICANS HAS CAUSED ADMINISTRATIVE PROBLEMS WHICH MUST BE OVERCOME BEFORE OTHER FORCES LAND.
