  • Description

MOUNTED POLICE AND GERMAN SHEPHERD DOGS WERE USED IN THE NORTHERN ARGENTINIAN CITY OF CORDOBA ON TUESDAY (23 AUGUST) TO BREAK UP GROUPS OF ANTI-GOVERNMENT STUDENTS FOLLOWING THE GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO RE-OPEN CORDOBA UNIVERSITY.

SEVERAL UNIVERSITIES WERE CLOSED BY THE MILITARY REGIME OF LIEUTENANT-GENERAL JUAN CARLOS ONGANIA AFTER VIOLENT CLASHES BETWEEN POLICE AND STUDENTS WHO WERE PROTESTING AGAINST THE DECISION TO END THE TRADITIONAL SYSTEM OF UNIVERSITY SELF-GOVERNMENT.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, THE GOVERNMENT ORDERED THE UNIVERSITIES IN BUENOS AIRES AND CORDOBA -- AMONG OTHERS -- TO RE-OPEN, BUT SCORES OF STUDENTS REFUSED TO ATTEND CLASSES.

IN CORDOBA, 72-STUDENTS VOICED THEIR OPPOSITION TO THE GOVERNMENT BY STAGING A HUNGER-STRIKE IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST.
