  • Description

A FIERCE FIRE SWEPT THROUGH A BIG DEPARTMENT STORE IN TOULOUSE IN FRANCE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) AND DESTROYED IT IN LESS THAN TWO HOURS.

ALL THE CITY'S REGULAR AND RESERVE FIREMEN WERE CALLED OUT TO TACKLE IT. THE FLAMES SPREAD WITH ALARMING SPEED THROUGH THE STORE'S THREE FLOORS. THE INTENSITY OF THE HEAT CAUSED PARTS OF THE BUILDING TO GIVE WAY -- SOME NARROWLY MISSED EVENING STROLLERS, OTHER BITS FELL ON A TAXI AND A BUS, WITHOUT INJURING ANYONE. FLYING CLASS FROM THE SHATTERING WINDOWS SHOWERED DOWN ON THE FIREMEN BELOW.

WARNING OF THE FIRE WAS GIVEN BY A BUS CONDUCTOR SOON AFTER THE STORE HAD CLOSED. FOR A FEW MINUTES SMOKE GUSHED OUT OF THE BUILDING, THEN BEFORE THE FIRE TRUCKS HAD ARRIVED, AN EXPLOSION SHOOK THE BUILDING. THE EXPLOSION IS THOUGHT TO HAVE COME FROM AN ACCUMULATION OF GAS FROM THE STORE'S HEATING SYSTEM.
