  • Description

A group of railway engineers from the Chinese People's Republic is in France to observe the trials of locomotives due to be delivered to China later this year.

The French engineering company Alsthom won the contract in April 1970 to supply 40 locomotives for use in mountain regions. The electrically-powered locomotives are designed to tackle gradients of three percent -- severe climbs by normal railway standards.

To work in these difficult conditions, the locomotives are exceptionally powerful, both in traction and braking capacity.

The Chinese experts saw one of the new locomotives on a demonstration run. The special train, which included carriages equipped with electronic monitoring devices, was headed by a French railways locomotive for safety reasons.
