    More than a thousand Buddhist monks and nuns gathered at Hongkong's Happy Valley race course on Thursday (13 July) to pray for victims of the recent landslide and aircrash disasters.

    Special interdenominational service were scheduled to take place the following day, when Hongkong government officials, including the Governor -- Sir Murray MacLehome -- would attend church services.

    Thursday's service, in which Buddhists and Taoists prayed together, was attended by more than 300 visitors -- many of them relatives of the disaster victims.

    The special rites began at three o'clock in the afternoon and were scheduled to end at six in the evening.

    Other religious groups, including Anglicans, Roman Catholics and Yaifong, will be holding services during the coming week.
