  • Description

The Mao Tse-tung Stadium in Zanzibar was filled on Tuesday (23 April) as the young people gathered for celebrations to mark the tenth anniversary of union with Tanzania.

Youths of the Young Pioneers and young soldiers presented a colourful day of song and dance.

Guest of honour was Mr. Rajab Diwani, a member of the Tanu executive from mainland Tanzania. The songs and dances told traditional African stories and a highlight was an interpretation of the signing of the agreement which brought Zanzibar and Tanganyika together as one nation on 26 April, 1964.

The union was not always a solid one. During the rule of Sheik Abeid Karume he retained absolute control of all affairs in Zanzibar. It was only after his assassination in 1972 that the island has moved politically and commercially nearer to President Julius Nyerere's mainland Government.
