  • Description

In a few days thousands of fish had been washed ashore either dead or dying. A mysterious epidemic had struck the marine life around Evans Head on the north coast of New South Wales.

Local residents watched as fish of all sizes -- ranging from schanapper to pilchards were washed ashore -- or even swam ashore to die...

A beachcomber in the area for thirty years, Bill Roberts, was amazed by the masses of dead fish. Known as Pippi Bill, he lives fifty yards from the water's edge and has never seem big fish like this washed up onto the beach. Executives of the Evans Head Fisherman's Co-operative examined the fish.. but could not find the cause of death.. and samples of the fish were sent to Sydney for study.

The most popular theory was that the trouble was caused by a so-called Red Tide -- an invasion of poisonous organisms that kills off all fish life. However, at this stage no decision had been made. Fishing has now resumed to normal.. but for a few weeks all fish sold from Evans Head and Byron Bay Co-operative will be inspected.
