  • Description

ENGLAND'S MIKE TAGG RAN A WELL-JUDGED RACE YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) TO WIN THE ANNUAL SAN SEBASTIAN CROSS COUNTRY RACE. TAGG CALLED UP A STRONG FINISH TO DEFEAT TOP-CLASS ATHLETES FROM TEN EUROPEAN AND AFRICAN NATIONS.

TAGG WON THE RACE, STAGED NEAR SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN, IN 30 MINUTES 49.4 SECONDS, FIVE METRES (YARDS) AHEAD OF SPAIN'S MARIANO HARO. IT WAS A FAST TIME FOR THE 10-KILOMETRE (6.2 MILE) COURSE, BUT MORE THAN A MINUTE OUTSIDE THE RECORD HELD BY ETHIOPIA'S MAMO WOLDE, THE OLYMPIC MARATHON CHAMPION. WOLDE CAME SEVENTH IN YESTERDAY'S RACE.

ABOUT 20,000 SPECTATORS WATCHED THE 150 RUNNERS START THE FOUR LAPS OF SAN SEBASTIAN'S "LASARTE" HORSE-RACING TRACK. FOR MUCH OF THE RACE THEY WATCHED ENGLAND'S TIM JOHNSTON BATTLE FOR THE LEAD WITH WOLDE, THREE TIMES WINNER OF THE EVENT. JOHNSTON MANAGED TO PULL AHEAD OF WOLDE, BUT HE WAS CAUGHT UP BY ANOTHER GROUP, WHICH INCLUDED TAGG. TAGG HELD ON TO WIN, AND HARO CAME THROUGH TO SNATCH SECOND PLACE FROM JOHNSTON. JOHNSTON WAS A COMFORTABLE THIRD, WITH THE ETHIOPIAN MASRESHA FOURTH.
