  • Description

In Palermo's Palazzo d'Ercole, home of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, deputies after a third ballot July 29 re-elected as President Signor Silvio Milazzo, the dissident Christian Democrat who founded his own party - the Christian Social Union. He won with left-wing backing including the Communists and by a majority of two.

His election means that he is again Chief Minister of the semi-autonomous island.

The island's to major parties are the Christian Democrats who boycotted the first ballot and the Communists. For the subsequent ballots the Christian Democrats put forward their own candidate.

Amid the island's stormy politics with the major parties seeing the issue as a fight between democracy and communism, Prime Minister Antonio Segni in Rome announced he would attend July 30 a meeting of the national executive of his Christian Democratic Party to consider the renewed Sicilian rebuff to the Rome Government.
