    SEVERAL HUNDRED YOUTHS CLASHED WITH POLICE IN WEST BERLIN YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) DURING AN ANTI VIETNAM DEMONSTRATION OUTSIDE THE CITY'S LARGEST DEPARTMENT STORE. THE PROTESTORS WERE CALLING FOR AN IMMEDIATE WITHDRAWAL OF UNITED STATES TROOPS FROM SOUTH VIETNAM.

    SEVERAL THOUSAND YOUTHS TOOK PART IN THE DEMONSTRATION. THEY CHOSE ONE OF WEST BERLIN'S BUSIEST CHRISTMAS SHOPPING DAYS TO HOLD THEIR PROTEST. FORMING TWO GROUPS, THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED IN ORDERLY FASHION THROUGH THE CITY. THE BIGGEST GROUP WAS MADE UP OF MAOISTS AND SUPPORTERS OF THE AMERICAN BLACK PANTHER PARTY. THEY WERE JOINED BY GROUPS OF ARAB WORKERS SUPPORTING EL-FATAH GUERRILLAS. THE DEMONSTRATORS LINKED ARMS AND MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY SHOUTING ANTI-AMERICAN SLOGANS AND CARRYING VIET CONG FLAGS.

    POLICE WERE CONTENT TO ALLOW THE DEMONSTRATION TO PROCEED IN AN ORDERLY FASHION. BARRICADES WERE SET UP AT STRATEGIC POINTS TO DEEP THE DEMONSTRATION FROM GETTING OUT OF HAND. THE ONLY CLASHES CAME WHEN SEVERAL HUNDRED OF THE DEMONSTRATORS ATTEMPTED TO ENTER THE CITY'S LARGEST DEPARTMENT STORE. POLICE BARRED THEIR WAY AND CLOSED ALL ENTRANCES TURNING THE YOUTHS BACK INTO THE STREET. THE MELEE DISRUPTED HEAVY CHRISTMAS TRAFFIC IN WEST BERLIN BUT THE SITUATION WAS QUICKLY BROUGHT UNDER CONTROL.
