VISNEWS filmed June 5 testing of Australia's largest blast furnace, Which began production June 9. The workers on this occasion wore special clothing to protect them from the flying sparks caused by the high silicone content of the first flow from the furnace.
Operated by Broken Hill Proprietary Limited at Port Kembla, the furnace will lift Australia's annual output of iron to three million tons. On the first day of production, seventeen hundred tons of pit iron were smelted at the furnace - one of the world's largest iron producers.
The furnace - standing on thirty acres of reclaimed swampland - took two years to build and cost over seven million pounds sterling.
