Background: Three armed man, believed to be Hungarians, last night (September 14) hijacked a BAC I-II jet of the Rumanian Tarom Airlines and forced it to land at Riem airport, Munich. The aircraft, with some sixty passengers on board, was on a flight from Bucharest to Prague.

The three men, who were armed with pistols and accompanied by a woman and two children, were disarmed and arrested by West German police soon after the plane landed.

Passengers and crew were immediately evacuated from the aircraft after one of the hijackers claimed a bomb was planted on board. An imitation bomb was found in the aircraft's lavatory.

The hijackers today appeared quite unworried at the prospect of prison sentences. "In Hungary we would get life, but here the most we can get is three year", they said.

The West German Government, currently involved in international negotiations to secure the release of hijack hostages still held by Arab guerrillas in Jordan, is likely to take a much more serious view of last night's incident.

This is the sixth successful hijacking this year from East Europe to the West. No reason has yet been given for the hijacking, except that the Hungarians are seeking political asylum.
