  • Description

The industrialised nations may soon be facing further economic setbacks as a result of primary producing countries taking a united price stand.

This seems possible following the opening of a non-aligned nations conference on raw materials which opened in the Senegalese capital of Dakar on Tuesday (February 4). The conference is being attended by about 100 nations.....some with a full speaking role, the rest as observers.

The tone of the conference was set by the Algerian delegate who said the raw producers should stand together....and had the means to do it. He proposed that the conference study means of strengthening existing producers' organisations, and of establishing similar groups in sectors where none presently exist.

The general mood of the developing nations' delegates has been tempered by the current oil prices and the uncertainty of financial aid from developed nations. But overall the speakers at the conference have agreed that they must stand together for what they see as a better deal from the industrialised countries.
