  • Description

PRESIDENT DE GAULLE TODAY (THURSDAY) UNDERTOOK THE SECOND DAY OF HIS TOUR OF TOWNS AROUND THE FRENCH CAPITAL. IN SPEECHES, YESTERDAY, THE PRESIDENT ATTACKED THE USSR AND THE US FOR, AS HE SAID, IMPOSING THEIR POWER ON OTHER NATIONS. THE PRESIDENT ALSO SAID HE SAW FRANCE PREDESTINED TO ESTABLISH A NEW BALANCE OF POWER IN A EUROPE UNITED FROM THE ATLANTIC TO THE URALS.

(THE FRENCH PRIME MINISTER, M. POMPIDOU ASSURED THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY IN PARIS TODAY THAT FRANCE REAFFIRMED ITS BELIEF IN THE ATLANTIC ALLIANCE. HE SAID THIS IN REPLY TO CRITICS OF FRANCE'S ATTITUDE TO THE UNITED STATES. HE TOLD THE ASSEMBLY THAT THE "ATLANTIC ALLIANCE WAS CONCEIVED TO FACE A REAL AND CLEAR THREAT. AS LONG AS THAT PERIL HAS NOT COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED, HE SAID, THE ALLIANCE WILL REMAIN NECESSARY.")
THE AFTERNOON PART OF TODAY TOUR TOOK THE PRESIDENT TO MONTEREAU, NEMOURS, FONTAINEBLEAU AND MELUN. BIG CROWDS WERE OUT AT MOST VANTAGE POINTS DESPITE AN APPEAL BY LOCAL UNIONS CALLING ON RESIDENTS OF THE SEINE AND MARNE DEPARTMENT NOT TO GO AND SEE THE PRESIDENT. AT THE SAME TIME, THE UNIONS SENT A LETTER TO HIM TO PROTEST AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY ON ECONOMY, FINANCE, SOCIAL WELFARE, SCHOOLS AND DEFENCE.
