  • Description

King Hussein of Jordan has begun making more frequent trips out of Amman. He curtailed his visits after the civil war, but with little tension now remaining in the country he has again started visits to outlying districts. His most recent was on Wednesday (12 June) to Madaba City in southern Jordan.

The town is the centre of the Karak region -- the largest of Jordan's Districts (called 'Muhafaza'). The people of the region have long been supporters of the King and he received an enthusiastic reception during his visit to Madaba City. Hundreds of people turned out to welcome him and the Prime Minister Zaid Al Rifai. Members of the Jordanian cabinet also made the trip.

In the past the visits were aimed at witnessing progress in the Districts and listening to suggestions from the local people. King Hussein seems determined to keep the tradition going to show that there is still order in the sountry, despite problems with Palestinian guerrillas and sections of the army earlier this year.
