Hungary now seem certain to qualify for next year's World Cup soccer finals in Argentina. In Budapest on Saturday (29 October) they thrashed Bolivia 6-0 in the first leg of their Europe-South America play-off, and the second leg in La Paz at the end of November, should be a formality.
SYNOPSIS: Hungary, in the red shirts, grabbed five goals before the interval, the first coming from a fierce Nyilasi header in the 11th minute.
More Hungarian pressure followed, and with 20 minutes gone they went two up. A through ball from the left found number nine Torocsik inside the area, and he scored with a neat, low drive. It was a well taken goal and one that rocked the Bolivians. The South Americans tried hard to play open football, but they lacked Hungary's speed and strength.
Zombori made it three nil to Hungary, and then in the 27th minute Varadi got a fourth goal with another fine shot from the edge of the area. The goalkeeper was well beaten, as the Hungarians continued to dominate.
At this stage the Hungarians looked an extremely fine side and it was no surprise when they went five up after 40 minutes. Pinter raced onto a through ball on the right of the area, and scored with a low criss cross drive.
After the interval Bolivia were much tighter in defence, and the sixth goal did not come until 10 minutes from time. The ball was played back to Nagy, who had come as a substitute, and he gave the goalkeeper no chance with a superb rising, left foot shot. It was a fine goal, and an impressive all-round performance by Hungary, who look set to become a major force again in world soccer.
