Background: Prince Sultan Abdelaziz, Defence Minister of Suadi Arabia, arrived in Bahrain on Sunday (March 25) for a three -day official visit. He was greeted at Bahrain's International Airport by the country's ruler, Amir Isa Bin Sulman Al-Khalifa.
The Saudi minister's visit had been arranged for several weeks, so was not thought to be a result of apprehensions in the tiny island country over last week's clash between Iraq and nearby Kuwait.
But it was believed the discussion between Bahrainian officials and the Saudi visitor would take in the border disagreement between Iraq and Kuwait.
Four people from both sides were killed in the frontier clash last weak, during which Iraqi forces occupied a Kuwait border post. The frontier lines between Iraq and the oil rich Persian Gulf state have long been a matter of dispute.
SYNOPSIS: On Sunday Sheikh Isa Bin Sulman Al-Khalifa Amir of Bahrain, met Saudi Arabia's Minister of Defence at Bahrain Airport.
Prince Sultan Abdelaziz was making a three-day official visit to the Persian Gulf island state for talks with Bahrainian officials. The visit had been arranged for several weeks and was believed unconnected with last week's border clash between neighbouring Kuwait and Iraq.
But it was thought inevitable that the discussions during Prince Sultan's visit would include the struggle over the ill-defined Kuwait-Iraq border.
Several Middle Eastern States, including Saudi Arabia and Jordan have attempted to mediate in the long-standing border dispute in Kuwait. The Amir and his guest inspected a Guard of Honour at the airport before leaving for an official reception at the Amir's residence.
