  • Description

King Birendra of Nepal, the landlocked Himalayan kingdom, has paid his first state visit to the Soviet Union. Nepal's strategic position, between India and China, is of interest to both the world's major powers - the United States and the Soviet Union.

SYNOPSIS: King Birendra arrived in Moscow, the Soviet capital, on Wednesday(17 November). The King, who was crowned four years ago, was welcomed by Soviet President Nikolai Podgorny. His entourage included Nepal's foreign minister Krishna Raj Aryal, who visited Moscow last year. Nepal follows a policy of strict non-alignment, and King Birendra has already paid state visits to Nepal's nearest neighbours - India and China. He has also visited Yugoslavia, where President Tito was one of the founders of the non-aligned movement.

His discussions in Moscow were expected to concentrate on bilateral relations, regional and international issues and Soviet aid to Nepal. The King is also likely to visit the United States next year, according to a news agency report. The Himalayan mountain kingdom has prospered in recent years largely because of foreign aid from the major powers.
