    THE KING OF BHUTAN ARRIVED IN NEW DELHI YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) FROM HIS HIMALAYAN KINGDOM FOR TALKS WITH THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT.

    THE KING WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS QUEEN AND A LARGE ENTOURAGE.

    IT IS THE FIRST TIME FOR FIVE YEARS THAT THE RULER OF BHUTAN HAS VISITED INDIA.

    NOTABLE ABSENTEES AT THE WELCOMING RECEPTION AT THE AIRPORT WERE MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS. BHUTAN HAS NO RELATIONS WITH ANY COUNTRY OTHER THAN INDIA.

    DURING THE DISCUSSIONS BETWEEN THE KING AND THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT, INDIAN ECONOMIC ASSISTANCE TO THE KINGDOM IS LIKELY TO BE RAISED. SINCE 1959, INDIA HAS ADVANCED GBP10-MILLION TO ASSIST BHUTAN'S DEVELOPMENT, AND HAS SPENT NEARLY GBP20-MILLION BUILDING ROADS TO AND WITHIN BHUTAN.

    BHUTAN HAS A POPULATION OF ABOUT 800-THOUSAND PEOPLE. UNDER A TREATY MADE IN 1949, THE KINGDOM IS GUIDED IN ITS FOREIGN AFFAIRS BY INDIA.

    THE KING, WHOSE FULL TITLE IS HIS MAJESTY THE D??? GYALPO, DRAGON KING, RULER OF BHUTAN, IS SPENDING FIVE DAYS INDIA AS A GUEST OF THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT.
