  • Description

The Union of African Parliament is to encourage new membership, thus improving solidarity among African countries. The UPA's executive committee met in the Ivory Coast capital of Abidjan on Wednesday (7 September) to discuss, among other things, the problems facing Africa and what the organisation can do about them.

SYNOPSIS: The President of the Ivory Coast's National Assembly, M. Philippe Yace, is the current chairman and he welcomed representatives of the 12 member countries.

To qualify for membership the countries must have a parliament, but the executive committee decided other countries could be represented as observers. It also decided to set up a committee to suggest methods of reorganising the UPA, which was established ten months ago in Mauritania.

    M. Yace told delegates the heavy responsibility which rests on the organisation is to try and find solutions to the crises threatening peace in Africa. He said too many countries are being forced to spend money on weapons rather than development. He called on African states to reinforce their solidarity and economic co-operation rather than wasting their time talking about idealogy. The Ivory Coast has given money for projects to be carried out by the UPA.
