PRESIDENT DE GAULLE SPENT LAST THURSDAY WATCHING THE CLOSING STAGES OF THE FRENCH FLEET'S SIX-DAY NAVAL AND AIR EXERCISE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN.

WEARING UNIFORM, GENERAL DE GAULLE FLEW OUT BY HELICOPTER FROM TOULON TO THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER "CLEMENCEAU". AMONG OTHER DEMONSTRATIONS, HE SAW LAUNCHINGS OF THE FRENCH "ETENDARD IV", THE CARRIER-BORNE JET AIRCRAFT DESTINED TO CARRY FRENCH-PRODUCED ATOMIC BOMBS.

THE "CLEMENCEAU" WAS SUBJECTED TO SIMULATED AIR BOMBARDMENT, AND LIVE ATTACKS WERE MADE ON TARGETS TOWED BEHIND HER. CHIEFS OF STAFF AND SENIOR COMMANDERS PRESENT INCLUDED THE PRESIDENT'S SON, CAPTAIN PHILIPPE DE GAULLE.

(GENERAL DE GAULLE WAS ALSO PRESENT AS A SUBMARINE HUNT WAS BEING CARRIED OUT, BEFORE CLOSING THE EXERCISE WITH A CEREMONIAL REVIEW. IN THE REVIEW, ESCORT VESSELS STEAMED PAST THE "CLEMENCEAU" AND AIRCRAFT FLEW OVERHEAD IN FORMATION).
