    Background: SAN SALVADOR, EL SALVADOR

A series of bomb blasts rocked the capital of El Salvador on New Year's day (1 January). The first explosion was at the Ungo printing works, owned by the family of Guillermo Manuel Ungo, one of the leaders of the ruling Democratic Revolutionary Front (FDR). Right-wing extremists are thought to be responsible for that blast, which was quickly followed by retaliatory attacks on government and business premises in the city. A housing authority building, and the homes of Salvadorean army officers, were struck, apparently by leftist guerrillas. Over 15,000 people are thought to have been killed last year in an undeclared civil war in the country between the guerrillas and security forces backed by right-wing terrorist groups.
