Background: Boxing fans saw Koichi Wajima of Japan successfully defend his world Junior Middleweight Title for the fifth time in Sappore, Japan. The fight was Wajima's at the end of the twelfth round. Silvane Bortini of Italy refused to come out of his corner for the 13th round, and the challenge was over.
Bortini was the world Boxing Association's Number 6 contender for the Junior Middleweight title.
SYNOPSIS: Wajima was sluggish to start, but began putting the pressure on Bortini in the 7th round. The challenger had wilted by the 11th round. Wajima pushed Bortini against the ropes as the 12th round started, and punished the Italian severely before the gong sounded. Slung against the ropes, Bortini almost went down on his back, but came back fighting. There were no Knockdowns - to the disappointment of the crowd of 8,000.
At the end of the 12th round, Bortini gave up, and refused to come out of his corner.
It was Wajima's 28th win in 31 fights.
