  • Description

AT KRANJSKA GORA, IN YUGOSLAVIA, THE TWO-DAY INTERNATIONAL SKIING EVENT, IN WHICH THE GIANT SLALOM COUNTS TOWARDS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, ENDED YESTERDAY. DUMENG GIOVANOLI, OF SWITZERLAND, WON WEDNESDAY'S GIANT SLALOM EVENT, MAKING HIS BEST TIME EVER IN HIS FIRST RUN.

GIOVANOLI, NUMBER 12, DID NOT MAKE SUCH A GOOD TIME ON HIS SECOND RUN AND WAS PLACED ONLY FOURTH THEN, BUT HIS FIRST RUN HAD BEEN SO FAST THAT IT GAVE HIM AN AVERAGE TIME OF 3 MINS 16.64 SECS, FAST ENOUGH TO WIN THE EVENT.

PATRICK RUSSEL, OF FRANCE, CAME SECOND IN BOTH RUNS IN THE GIANT SLALOM AND SECOND OVER-ALL, WITH AN AVERAGE TIME OF 3 MINS 17.41 SECS. HE WAS ALSO JUDGED THE BEST SKIER OF THE KRANJSKA GORA SEASON.

ANOTHER FRENCHMAN, NUMBER 29 -- GEORGES MAUDUIT -- CAME THIRD IN THE EVENT, ALMOST TWO SECONDS BEHIND GIOVANOLI.

IN YESTERDAY'S SLALOM EVENT, WHICH DID NOT COUNT TOWARDS THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS, GIOVANOLI COULD MANAGE ONLY AN OVER-ALL THIRD PLACE, COMING FIRST IN THE FIRST RUN AND THIRD IN THE SECOND, WITH AN AVERAGE TIME OF 117.48 SECONDS.

THE SLALOM EVENT PROVIDED A NUMBER OF SURPRISES, NOT THE LEAST OF WHICH WAS GIOVANI'S DEFEAT, BUT PROBABLY THE BIGGEST OF WHICH WAS THE WIN BY PETER FREI, OF SWITZERLAND. IN THE FIRST RUN HE WAS PLACED SEVENTH....BUT MADE SUCH A FAST TIME ON HIS SECOND THAT HE WAS PLACED OVERALL FIRST WITH AN AVERAGE TIME OF 116.68 SECONDS.

SECOND IN THE EVENT CAME NORWAY'S HANS BJORGE, WITH AN AVERAGE TIME OF 117.35 SECONDS.
