    HONG KONG IS RELATIVELY QUIET AFTER YESTERDAY'S (SUNDAY) POLICE RAIDS ON COMMUNIST ORGANISATIONS IN WHICH 600 PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED.

    THE POLICE ACTION WAS THE BIGGEST YET IN A SERIES OF RAIDS WHICH STARTED LAST WEEK IN AN EFFORT TO CLAMP DOWN ON RIOTING AND INDUSTRIAL DISTURBANCES THAT HAVE HIT THE COLONY FOR THE LAST TWO MONTHS.

    ONE OF THE RAIDS WAS ON THREE COMMUNIST UNIONS IN THE SHA KAI WAN DISTRICT ON HONG KONG ISLAND.

    BRITISH TROOPS PLACED A BARBED WIRE CORDON AROUND THE AREA AS POLICE MADE THEIR RAIDS. THEY GAINED ENTRY INTO THE BUILDING BY BLASTING DOWN A DOOR. INSIDE THEY FOUND WEAPONS, INCLUDING MOLOTOV COCKTAILS AND SWORDS. A NUMBER OF MEN AND WOMEN WERE ARRESTED AND TAKEN AWAY IN POLICE TRUCKS.

    IN OTHER RAIDS YESTERDAY, POLICE SHOT DEAD TWO MEN AND WOUNDED SEVERAL OTHERS WHO THREW EXPLOSIVES AT THEM WHILE THEY WERE RAIDING A TRADE UNION HEADQUARTERS IN THE NEW TERRITORIES ON THE MAINLAND PART OF THE COLONY.

    DURING THE RAIDS, ON BOTH SIDES OF THE HARBOUR, POLICE AND TROOPS FOUND HUNDREDS OF WEAPONS. AMONG THOSE ARRESTED WERE TEENAGERS, WOMEN OLD MEN.

    THAT EVENING, RIOT POLICE FIRED TEAR GAS AT UNRULY CROWDS IN THE WATERFRONT DISTRICT OF WANCHAI. ONE MAN WAS KILLED AND SEVERAL OTHERS INJURED BEFORE THE MOB WAS BROKEN UP.
