  • Description

Arsonists set fire to three small Christian religious centres in Jerusalem on Monday (11 February).

The first blaze happened at the Baptist Centre in the city, three hours after midnight. Shortly after, there were fires at the Missionary Swedish Institute for Theology, and a nearby biblical shop called the House of Zion.

The fire brigade controlled the fires quickly, but damage was caused to all three centres. The worst damage was at the biblical shop, while in the other two, books and office equipment were damaged. No one was injured.

In all of the incidents, windows and doors were forced open and the fires started with kerosene soaked rags. The culprits were believed to be religious extremists, opposed to missionary work among Jews.

The Mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek, expressed regret over the incident. He said the city would pay for all the damage to the centres.

This film includes a statement by Mayor Teddy Kollek. A transcription appears below.

It was one of three Christian religious centres to be set ablaze by arsonists in the early hours of the morning. the first blaze happened at the Baptist Centre in the city, and was closely followed by fires at the Missionary Swedish Institute for Theology, and at the biblical shop.

The fire brigade controlled the fires quickly, but books and equipment in the office were destroyed. No one was injured. In all three incidents, windows and doors were forced open, and the fires started with rage soaked in kerosene. The culprits were believed to be religious extremists, opposed to missionary work among Jews. Similar acts of vandalism occurred last year, when several people were arrested. The Mayor of Jerusalem, Teddy Kollek, telephoned the leaders of the three centres to apologise for the fires, then made a public broadcast.
