    About ten thousand people gathered at Gary, Indiana on Friday (10 March) for the opening of the First United States National Black Convention.

    The convention will last three days and is intended to pave the way for America's 22-million blacks to play a larger role in the country's political and economic life.

    The meeting has billed as the most significant gathering of black people in the history of the United States.

    Groups attending the convention range from the extremist Black Panthers, to the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Black Muslims.

    The meeting ends on Sunday (12 March).

    (A leading figure at the convention is the Mayor of the host town, Gary. He's Mr. Richard Thatcher -- the town's first black mayor).
