  • Description

In Forest Hills, New York, Argentina's Guillermo Vilas has won the U.S. Open Tennis Championship after beating the defending champion Jimmy Connors of the United States in four sets 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-0. The match took three hours and fifteen minutes to complete. Connors started brilliantly, lashing the ball with such accuracy, that at 1-2 in the first set, Vilas went on to lose the next five games. But in the second set Vilas began to recover his form after seeing hand signals from his coach.

SYNOPSIS: The job in taming Connors fast and accurate returns wasn't easy however. Here's why.

Vilas managed to break up Connors' game in the second set, with slice and top spin to win the set in 44 minutes with this point.

With six games all in the third set Connors went on to produce this brilliant winning rally during the tie breaker.

But Vilas, gaining confidence with each stroke, went on to win the tie-breaker after drawing Connors to the net and playing a forehand volley into an empty court. It proved Connors' undoing.

Now, love-five down in the fourth set Connors tries to save the match. But the championship was all Vilas' after a forehand approach shot by Connors was judged to be out.

The crowd rose as one, and Vilas was soon engulfed by ecstatic supporters who carried him shoulder high around the court. It was a match befitting the last U.S. Open to be held at Forest Hills.

For Vilas, the title means 19,000 pounds sterling (32,680 U.S dollars) in prize money and a claim to be the world's number one. It's his thirty-ninth straight win since Wimbledon.
