Background: Riot police and students clashed in Santiago on Tuesday (3 October) following unauthorised demonstration marches by the students protesting against the appointment of Marxist directors to Chilean schools by the Allenda Government. They were also protesting against the forty-eight-hour closure of Radio Sociedad National de Agriculture (National Agricultural Society Radio) after the station had broadcast what the Government called "false and alarmist" reports about an incident between troops and peasants in Southern Chile, in which three civilians were wounded.

The High School Students Federation has been protesting for several weeks - and there have been earlier confrontations between them and the police - and Education Minister Anibal Palma offered to resign if this would pacify the students. But President Salvador Allends refused to accept his resignation - and the protests continued.

This coverage shows good action - with considerable numbers of non-students joining in the clashes with the police.
