  • Description

Europeans and Africans mingled along the route to the Central African Trade Fair and Agricultural Show at Bulawayo Southern Rhodesia for the opening by the Queen Mother May 14, but police had to intervene in some racial scuffles near the Royal route. Africans were not included in the presentation at the airport when the Queen Mother flew in from Salisbury earlier. But Africans of the First Battalion of the Rhodesian Rifles formed a guard of honor.

At the Fair and Show, the Queen Mother inspected cattle and watched the judging before presenting the One Thousand Guinea Trophy for the supreme champion animal. During her tour of the Trade Fair she visited stands at the pavilions of Portugal, South Africa and the Central African Federation.

During the visit the Queen Mother received a huge bouquet - she ordered it to be sent by air to an aged African butler in her service during her visit to the Federation 1957 and now in hospital near Salisbury Southern Rhodesia.

Further racial strife in Northern Rhodesia's copperbelt, to be toured by the Queen Mother May 20-21, might cause a change in her programme there, a Government spokesman said.
