  • Description

THE EASTER WEEK-END BROUGHT A STEADY STREAM OF VISITORS TO WEST BERLIN, AND MANY CARS WITH WEST GERMAN NUMBER PLATES WERE QUEUEING FOR HOURS AT PRINZENSTRASSE CHECKPOINT ON THE EAST-WEST BERLIN BORDER, APR 21, AS THOUSAND OF WEST GERMANS WAITED TO BE ADMITTED TO THE DIVIDED CITY'S EASTERN SECTOR FOR A BRIEF EASTER SATURDAY REUNION WITH FRIENDS AND RELATIVES.

WEST BERLINERS WERE NOT ALLOWED SUCH FREE ACCESS TO EAST BERLIN. MANY OF THEM HAD COUNTED ON THE RUMOUR CIRCULATING IN THE CITY ALL WEEK THAT THE EAST GERMAN AUTHORITIES WOULD RELAX THEIR RULES FOR BERLINERS OVER THE HOLIDAY AND PERMIT OLD PEOPLE AND YOUNG CHILDREN TO SEE THEIR RELATIONS. BUT THEY WERE DISAPPOINTED.

EAST BERLIN POLICE OPENED FIRE WITH SUB-MACHINE GUNS, APR 21, ON A WEST BERLIN POLICE PATROL CAR IN BERNAUERSTRASSE. THE CAR RETURNED THE FIRE. NO ONE WAS HURT BUT THE INCIDENT WAS REGARDED AS SERIOUS SINCE IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT EASTERN SECURITY GUARDS HAVE FIRED ON WESTERN TERRITORY WITHOUT THE EXCUSE OF SHOOTING AT PEOPLE TRYING TO ESCAPE.
