  • Description

THE WIMBLEDON LAWN TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS: AUSTRALIA, HAVING BEEN ECLIPSED IN THE SINGLES, CONSOLED THEMSELVES TODAY (SATURDAY) BY WINNING THE MEN'S DOUBLES. IN AN ALL-AUSTRALIAN FINAL, JOHN NEWCOMBE AND KEN FLETCHER BEAT OWEN DAVIDSON AND BILL BOWERY 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

FLETCHER, A QUEENSLANDER WHO NOW LIVES IN HONGKONG, TEAMED UP WITH NEWCOMBE WHEN TONY ROCHE WITHDREW BECAUSE OF AN ANKLE INJURY. ROCHE AND NEWCOMBE WON THE TITLE LAST YEAR. TODAY THERE WAS NO DOUBT NEWCOMBE WOULD RETAIN THE TROPHY.

HE AND FLETCHER SERVED THEIR WAY TO THE FIRST TWO SETS, BUT THEY FALTERED IN THE THIRD AS DAVIDSON THE MELBOURNE LEFT-HANDED PRODUCED SOME OF THE TENNIS THAT TOOK HIM TO THE SEMI-FINALS OF THE SINGLES.

EXPERIENCE WAS THE DECIDING FACTOR. FLETCHER AND NEWCOMBE, VOLLEYING WELL AND FORCING YOUNGER OPPONENTS INTO ERRORS, CRUISED THROUGH THE FOURTH SET. A SMASH FROM FLETCHER ENDED THE MATCH.
