    Background: PARIS, FRANCE

France will spend 400 million francs (about 57 million dollars) to host next year's European Soccer Championships. The French Football Federation announced on February 3 the names of the seven cities chosen to host the matches. They are Paris, Lens, Lyons, Marseilles, Nantes, Saint Etienne and Strasbourg. The finals of the championships, in which 33 nations are due to compete, will take place at the Parc des Princes in Paris on June 27, 1984. The announcement coincided with the launching, by the European Union Football Associations (UEFA), of their new promotional emblem, at a news conference in the French capital. The new emblem, illustrated on a T-shirt worn for the occasion by Miss France 1983, Isabelle Turpault, was designed by Piero Gratton, head of the graphics and animation services of Italian Televisions's second channel RAI-2. UEFA President Dr Artemio Franchi, who presented the new design, told reporters the associations' traditional emblem -- a sylised representation of version, he said, would be used for commercial and promotional purposes. He then pointed out how the French Football Federation had modified the new design to create its own promotional emblem for the 1984 European Football Championships -- by changing to blue, white and red colours of the new design, and adding the figure 84. Each UEFA member-nation could now have its own version of the UEFA promotional emblem.
