  • Description

SEVEN OF THE DAYAKS IN SARAWAK WHO JOINED AS HOME GUARDS IN LIMBANG AREA AND HELPED THE SARAWAK RANGERS AND BRITISH FORCES QUELL THE DECEMBER REBELLION, RECENTLY CELEBRATED THEIR RETURN TO THEIR LONG HOUSE IN ENGKILILI, NEAR THE INDONESIAN BORDER, ABOUT 150 MILES SOUTH-EAST OF KUCHING.

IT IS AN ANCIENT CUSTOM AMONG THE DAYAKS, WHO FORM THE MAJOR POPULATION OF SARAWAK, TO CELEBRATE WITH DANCING AND FEASTING THE HOMECOMING OF THE MEN WHO WENT OUT TO FIGHT. THE WOMEN ORGANIZE THE OCCASION BUT IT IS THE MEN DO THE DANCING.

THE DAYAKS MOSTLY LIVE ON RIVER BANKS IN LARGE COMMUNITY HOUSES BUILT ON STILTS. THE VERANDAH OF THE LONG HOUSE IS THE MEETING PLACE FOR COMMUNITY CELEBRATIONS.

WHEN HEAD HUNTING WAS COMMON PRACTICE IN THE AREA, THE MEN USED TO DANCE HOLDING THE HEADS OF THE VICTIMS. BUT NOW THE HEAD IS SUBSTITUTED WITH A BASKET OF BONES.

THE DRESS OF THE DANCERS, THE MUSIC AND DANCES ARE HOWEVER TRADITIONAL.
