  • Description

Because Jordanian Commerce and Arab League officials have been reluctant to accept imported merchandise from the Israeli-occupied West Bank of Jordan, on the grounds that Israelis may have helped with production, representatives of the West Bank Arab Chamber of Commerce travelled to Amman on Monday (6 Sept) to try and allay these and similar doubts. Chief spokesman Mr. H. Malhees told Mr. Ali Bdeir and other officials of the Union Chamber of Commerce that all merchandise exported through Jordan was made by Arab hands, and that any move to prevent marketing from the West Bank to Jordan and other Arab countries, could cause a crippling stoppage of income for the West Bank, and it would then be difficult to maintain an element of independence without co-operating with the Israelis.

The concern of West Bank producers has been heightened because of plans to discuss the matter in Cairo on September 11th when members of the Arab League meet. Mr. Ali Bdeir has told the West Bank spokesmen that the Union Chambers of Commerce would defend West Bank rights in future discussions.
