  • Description

Twenty-two passengers and the crew of four emerged unscathed on Monday (4 January) from an East African Airways airliner when it crash-landed shortly after take-off from Nairobi's Embakasi airport.

The pilot brought the aircraft, a Fokker Friendship turbo-prop, safely in to land back at the airport, his undercarriage collapsing shortly after touch-down. Considerable damage was caused to the airliner, but there was no fire.

The aircraft, bound for Monbasa and Malindi, turned back to Nairobi when the captain, Mr. F.W. Alleyne, discovered an undercarriage fault. Two African stewardesses - one making her fight flight - helped comfort the passengers during the final approach for the crash-landing.

One eye-witness said "It was a brilliant piece of flying. He touched down as light as a feather".

A passenger told reporters: "It was nerve-shattering. We are only in one piece now thanks to the brilliance of the captain, and the rest of the crew were also magnificent. The were ice-cool, and helped to calm us down".
