  • Description

A mother of four risked her life in Sydney this week in an attempt to stop demolition teams from bulldozing here brother's house. Mrs Beatrice Evans, of the outer Sydney suburb of Mt Druitt, raced into the house as a bulldozer ripped out the side and the roof threatened to crash on her. Then she flung herself in the path of the bulldozer and was saved from possible death when bystanders propped up the blades. The house was torn down on the orders of the State Planning Authority to make way for a new civic centre. Mrs Evans said her brother had lived in the weatherboard temporary hope for some time and her own house too was under demolition orders.

Mrs evans said her brother had been offered $6,450(Aust) for his half-acre block. She had been offered $13,600 for her house by the State Planning Authority-- but both figures, she claimed, were far too low% to enable them to set up elsewhere Mrs Evans road to her brother's house when the bulldozers started to tear it down. She made a last- ditch stand to have the demolition stopped by -- but a short time later the house had been reduced to rubble. Now, residents of the Mt Druitt area have asked the State Government for a public enquiry into the $200-million civic centre. A petition signed by 1000 people accuses the State Planning Authority of "misrepresentation and evasive procedures."
A spokesman for the Authority said the premises in question were resumed in 1968. Since then, he said, the authority had made several offers of settlement to Mrs Evans brother, Mr A. Davis, and he also had the right to take the matter to the Land and Valuation Court.
