  • Description

At the Vatican, Pope John Paul has met newsmen in a relaxed and sometimes light-hearted news conference, during which he appealed to the reporters to avoid reporting trivial matters. The new Pope's reign will be launched on Sunday (3 September) with a simple ceremony, when he will be installed as Pope.

SYNOPSIS: Speaking in Italian, Pope John Paul told the newsmen that if the early Christian disciple St Paul returned to the world he would head Reuters, the international news agency, and seek time on television. This was one of several departures from the Pope's prepared text, and observers aid it indicated his awareness of the influence of the mass media. The new Pope urged the newsmen to concentrate on major issues when reporting on the Holy See, and to avoid minor matters.

The new Pope thanked the newsmen for their reports on the death of his predecessor Pope Paul, and on the Conclave which last Saturday (26 August) elected the new Pope. But he criticised some stories of pre-Conclave bargaining. he said there were no factions.

In earlier speeches Pope John Paul has conceded he has little knowledge of foreign affairs and the government machinery of the Roman Catholic Church but he promised to work closely with his cardinals and pursue an active foreign policy. He appealed to the newsmen to safeguard what he called the things of God.
