    GENERAL NIMMO, CHIEF OF THE UNITED NATIONS OBSERVERS IN KASHMIR, HAS BEEN WITH SOME OF HIS SUBORDINATES TO INSPECT DAMAGE ALLEGED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY PAKISTAN INFILTRATORS IN KASHMIR.THEY SAW BUILDING RAZED BY FIRE AND FORMER OCCUPANTS DIGGING IN THE DEBRIS FOR THEIR BELONGINGS.

    THE INDIAN DEFENCE MINISTER, MR CHAVAN, MADE A STATEMENT YESTERDAY (MONDAY) ON THE KASHMIR TROUBLE.IN PARLIAMENT HE SAID THAT AN ARMED INCURSION OF MEN, DISGUISED AS CIVILIANS HAD INFILTRATED INTO KASHMIR.INDIANS KILLED NUMBERED 21 POLICE, 5 OFFICERS AND 41 OTHER RANKS, SAID MR.CHAVAN.OF THE INFILTRATORS 153 HAD BEEN KILLED, AND 84 ARRESTED.

    MR.CHAVAN ALSO SAID THAT U.N.ASSURANCES ABOUT FRONTIER POSTS IN KARGIL HAD BEEN NULLIFIED BY INFILTRATION IN THE AREA.INDIAN TROOPS HAD RETAKEN THE AREA, AS U.N.OBSERVERS WERE HELPLESS TO PROTECT THE SRINAGAR-LEH ROAD.

    YESTERDAY GENERAL NIMMO AND THE INDIAN ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF, GENERAL CHAUDHURI, HAD TWO MEETINGS DURING WHICH EVIDENCE OF PAKISTAN'S ALLEGED RESPONSIBILITY FOR MASSIVE INFILTRATION INTO KASHMIR WAS DISCUSSED.
