    Abdullah Zahiruddin.....the first Bangladesh Ambassador to Pakistan....arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday (31 December) to what observers described as an "unusually warm welcome".

    His arrival at the capital formalised the establishment of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and its former eastern wing, which broke away in December, 1971.

    "I have come with a bagful of goodwill and messages of best wishes from the President, Government and people of Bangladesh," Mr. Zahiruddin, a former Education Minister in the Central Government of Pakistan, said on his arrival.

    Mr. Zahiruddin was greeted by Pakistan's Deputy-Foreign Secretary, Shah Nawaz...usually new ambassadors are met by the government Chief of Protocol.

    Pakistan and Bangladesh decided the exchange ambassadors last October, following talks in New York between their heads of delegations to the United Nations General Assembly.

    Mr. Zahiruddin said his first task would be to see that both countries "sit down and sort out problems involved in setting up of trade relations and communications."
    Pakistan's Ambassador to Bangladesh, Mohammed Khurshid, is expected to go to Dacca in the second week of this month.
