  • Description

This 106mm Recoilless Rifle is designed to pierce tank armor. In Vietnam it is being used as an anti-personnel weapon and to blast enemy fortifications. Here, after a fierce fight, way U.S. Marines patrol Hill 881, 13 miles from Khe Sanh. Nearby a supporting recoilless rifle crew readies to fire at a hill-side position of some North Vietnamese Army snipers.

Detouring cautiously, the "Leatherneck patrol fans out to comb the target area for enemy fighting positions. In this terrain, pocked by bombs and artillery, holes and trenches abound. Moving carefully, the probing Marines uncover a maze of mutually supporting North Vietnamese fortifications. Their job is to seal them.

Marine engineers systematically seed each hole and bunker with skillfully planted high explosives. Methodically, moving with precision and patience, the engineers blow up one after another of the enemy emplacements.

When they are finished with this area, they continue in their search for more enemy positions.
