THE PRIME MINISTERS, MR. KARAMANLIS, RESIGNED ON TUESDAY IN DISAGREEMENT OVER THE KING'S DETERMINATION TO MAKE THE STATE VISIT. HE THINKS THIS SHOULD BE CANCELLED, OR AT LEAST POSTPONED, BECAUSE OF DEMONSTRATIONS IN WHICH QUEEN FREDERIKA WAS INVOLVED DURING HER VISIT TO BRITAIN IN APRIL FOR THE WEDDING OF PRINCESS ALEXANDRA.

    BEFORE THE POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS YESTERDAY, KING PAUL AND LEADING POLITICIANS ATTENDED A CHURCH SERVICE IN ATHENS IN MEMORY OF THE LATE POPE JOHN. THE KING WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE CROWN PRINCE CONSTANTINE; THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR, SIR RALPH MURRAY, WAS PRESENT. THE SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT, MR. RODOPOULOS, WHO ALSO ATTENDED, WAS LATER CALLED BY THE KING TO DISCUSS THE PARLIAMENTARY STRENGTH OF THE POLITICAL PARTIES.LATER STILL, THE KING MET MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU, LEADER OF THE MAIN OPPOSITION PARTY, THE UNION OF THE CENTRE, WHICH HAS 78 SEATS, COMPARED TO MR. KARAMANLIS'S RULING RADICAL UNION HAS 180 OF THE 300 SEATS.

    MR. PAPANDREOU TOLD REPORTERS AFTER MEETING KING PAUL THAT A GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE FORMED WHICH WOULD ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ROYAL VISIT TO LONDON.
