  • Description

A Hawker Siddeley 125 jet executive aircraft was handed to Bristol Siddeley Engines at the Company's airfield at Filton last night.

For an initial period this machine will be used for a programme of performance and handling checks on its Bristol Siddeley Viper engines. This will be followed by a period of intensive flying which will consist mainly of simulated business journeys, nearly half of which will be flights into Europe.

This is intended to lead to certification of the Viper 20 engine with a declared initial life between overhauls of 800 hours.

The aircraft will then join the Hawker Siddeley Doves of Bristol Siddeley's communications fleet and go into general use for urgent business journeys.

Bristol Siddeley's Doves already fly constantly to Europe, but the new 500 mph six-seater will make day trips possible as far afield as Rome, and the crossing of the Alps presents no problem with a high flying, pressurised jet aircraft such as the 125.

The Viper 20, two of which power the Hawker Siddeley 125, has a thrust of 3000 lb.Other versions power the Jet Provost trainers of the Royal Air Force, the Macchi 326 trainers of the Italian Air Force, the Jindivik target drone and many experimental and prototype machines.

The Viper 20 has also been chosen for the Piaggio Douglas 808? executive six seater, which is due to fly towards the end of this year.
