  • Description

Australia on Saturday (15 March) evacuated its embassy in Phnom Penh as the fighting around the Khmer capital intensified.

The six remaining embassy staff flew of Phnom Penh on an Australian Air Force C-130 transport aircraft from Butterworth Base in Malaysia.

18 evacuees of other nationalities also flew out in the special flight to Bangkok the same day. Among them were the Singaporean Charge D'Affaires and his staff.

Mr. Milne said the Australian government "will recognise any government that comes to power in Cambodia", including Prince Norodom Sihanouk Gouvernement Royale Unific National Du Khmer (GRUNK) -- should the Khmer Rouge forces supporting that government take power in Phnom Penh.

The Australian embassy evacuation follows previous total evacuations carried out by the Polish and Israeli embassies in the Khmer Republic.

The British embassy in Phnom Penh has already evacuated all non-essential embassy staff last week.

On Monday, the French Embassy is expected to evacuate it's non-essential staff.
