  • Description

WALES GAVE ONE OF THEIR BEST DISPLAYS IN INTERNATIONAL FOOTBALL FOR MANY YEARS WHEN THEY BEAT RUSSIA BY TWO GOALS TO ONE IN A QUALIFYING GROUP MATCH FOR THE WORLD SOCCER CUP AT CARDIFF TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY). THE WELSH VICTORY ENDED THE RUSSIAN'S RUN OF VICTORIES IN THE GROUP.

THE RUSSIANS WERE NEVER REALLY IN THE MATCH DOMINATED BY THE WELSH ELEVEN. THE HOME SIDE, CHEERED ON BY A PARTISAN CROWD OF 44,000, SHOT TO PIECES RUSSIA'S SCIENTIFIC PLANNING BY FIGHTING HARD FOR CONTROL OF THE BALL FROM THE FIRST TO THE LAST WHISTLE.

RUSSIA SCORED FIRST WHEN ENTRE-FORWARD BANISHEVSKY SCORED AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY ABOUT 16 MINUTES AFTER START OF PLAY IN THE FIRST HALF. BUT TWO MINUTES LATER WALES WERE LEVEL. INSIDE-RIGHT ROY VERNON, SCORED A PERFECT GOAL FOLLOWING A FREE KICK.

AFTERWARDS WALES WERE SO DOMINANT THAT IT LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE THE TEAM ALREADY THROUGH TO NEXT JULY'S FINALS - AND NOT THE SOVIET UNION WHO HAVE ALREADY QUALIFIED. WALES SCORED THEIR WINNING GOAL THROUGH VETERAN IVOR ALLCHURCH ABOUT 11 MINUTES FROM THE FINAL WHISTLE.
