  • Description

It was a fine day for songs in praise of love at the International Song Festival held in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday (3 October). Over twenty-thousand cheering spectators listened to singers from all parts of the globe. Mexico won the contest when the Castro Brothers were awarded the "Golden Bantam" for their rendition of a ballad "After Love". Second prize went to Pakistan's Rocky Shahan who impressed the crowd with a rock and blues mixture called "Love is on my Mind". Brazil came in third with a soul song in praise of God entitled "Kyrie".

It was sung by a black trio named Ternura. Observers at the Festival saw the results as a victory for "third-world" nations as European and U.S. contestants placed well down in the prize list.
